After potting up from new, this Dahlia showed signs of Crown Gall. A bacterial infection which leads to distorted leaves and a disappointing plant. I did plant it up, but it just got worse and I eventually decided to bin it. Sad really. It was to be a lovely big yellow one, but it was […]
A really striking triple coloured Dahlia. Subsequent blooms seem to have less red and more white. Maybe due to the ground conditions or dry weather. It made a really big plant with lots of stems on it. Filled out wonderfully. Took good cuttings from it too and gave them away.
The first of my Dahlias to flower. Really big blooms. Wonderfully striking. Took good cuttings from it too and that has flowered well also.
First flower … 25/08/2020 Larger leaves and not quite as tall as some of the others, but we’ll see what the flowers look like. The flowers are a massive, showy red explosion. Not sure I love them, but they are amazing! I binned it in November 2020 to make room for nicer varieties. I didn’t […]
First flower … TBC This got really attacked by the slugs when it first went in the ground. Whether this was due to its position or if it particularly tasty for them, I don’t know.
I’ve taken a punt on trying to grow Agapanthus in the ground as they do so well down here in Devon. This one may need to be transplanted into a pot. It’s not done a lot so far this year. A few new leaves, but that’s about it. I will probably swap it with my […]
Blackberry Thornfree. I planned to have a blackberry grown up and around the fence behind my border. Given enough time and a bit of training this might work … We’ll see. This bush did take quite some time to get away, but now (August 2020) has a couple of good canes running up the fence.
A vigorous climber which seems to be quite hardy and easy to train. It also put out a lot of strong shoots in a lot of directions. It seems to flower one at a time along the length of the stems, which is nice, but not very striking. Bought at the same time as the […]
A vigorous climber which seems to be quite hardy and easy to train. It also put out a lot of strong shoots in a lot of directions. I bought this one off the cuff from Tesco (along with a white version: Passiflora caerulea “Constance Eliott”) to replace a previous passion flower which was planted in […]
A wonderful tall Bergamot. Bright red flowers on single stalks. Mine was struck down with terrible Downy Mildew in it’s first growing season. It is now recovered with a lot of watering and looks to be a lot better now. Fingers crossed it will survive the winter as it is a lovely plant.
