Fatsia japonica ‘Spider’s Web’

The first of our shade shrubs for putting in the lower woodland border over the winter. Bought as an impulse buy from our trip to Withleigh Nurseries up near Tiverton. This one needs shade and is quite tolerant of the conditions in the woodland bed, so hopefully it will do well. It was planted near […]

Dahlia ‘David Howard’

A lovely dark leaved dahlia with lots of bright orange flowers. Really striking. I had it in a pot which previously held one of our sad peonies. It looked a bit sad as it was probably a bit cramped. Tried to keep it fed and it did flower well. This was lifted on 7 November […]

Rudbeckia fulgida ‘Goldsturm’

A really reliable Rudbeckia. I had a big clump of this in my Manchester allotment for a long time and it looked fabulous every year. This plant has grown away well and flowered in its first year, so I’m keen to see it develop in later years.

Phlox paniculata ‘Blue Paradise’

This little Phlox has looked ill ever since planting. Just one sad stem with a flower on top. It has stayed alive though, so may bulk up and improve next year. I will persevere with it as I like the little flowers and my Phlox in Manchester did really well for a long time. Lifted […]

Foeniculum vulgare ‘Purpureum’

A pretty fennel which has just done it’s own thing this year, despite complete neglect. I only really started to notice it later on when it was flowering and it really grew on me. I bought it on impulse from an open garden. It looked great there. Gives good height to the border without shading […]

Hosta sieboldiana ‘Blue Angel’

A pretty Hosta, which hasn’t grown very large for me. I had it planted in the lower woodland bed for a few months but it got absolutely savaged by snails. They love it, making it look ragged, which is a shame. Probably needs a bigger pot to get to it’s full size. I should really […]

Baptisia ‘Solar Flare’

A beautiful addition to my border. The spikes do take a while to show in the spring, but it is robust throughout the rest of the year. Purchased from the lilliesandchillies.co.uk stall at Tobys Garden Festival in 2019. This was dug up and put in a pot temporarily. It will be move to a better […]

Rhodocoma capensis

Bought at the wonderful Toby’s Garden Festival in 2019. I purchased this to be a statement tall grass as you enter the lower garden. Mine doesn’t seem to be very tall though. Only 2 feet high after a year in the ground.
